First things first, you’ve got to consider the rent. And see if it justifies all of the factors mentioned down below. So we suggest you crush your numbers and decide on a minimum and a maximum limit for your rental budget. Because in case you find a PG accommodation so good, it makes you want to delay ordering those pricey sneakers, then go for it. Even if it means paying some extra monies. Trust us, after you get busy with your truckload of assignments, you’re gonna want to come back home to a comfy house. So those sneakers can definitely wait.
That’s the thing about PGs. Some of them will provide you with just basic amenities. While others will throw in a few extra perks in exchange for a slightly increased monthly rent. Now, it totally depends on how important each of them is to you. But if you ask us, healthy meals, good ventilation, a hygienic washroom and an AC (if the city’s got really hot summers) are things you should definitely not compromise upon. Kinda like how uncles never compromise on a Marigold biscuit with their morning chai.
The location of your paying guest house is another crucial thing you need to factor in. Because think about this. Your last class of the day ends at 6. You pack your bags and grab the auto to the metro station. Then you’ve got 10 metro stations to cover until you take an auto to reach your exact address. Now, if that sounds taxing to hear, then imagine doing it every day. It’s why paying that extra 2-3k for a PG right next to your college is totally worth it. In fact, we hope it’s as big of a no-brainer as picking non-veg biryani over veg at a similar price.
Let’s be honest, we may wish for a lot of things, but most of it comes down to monies. So when you shortlist a few good PGs for a visit, make sure to clarify the security deposit and every other expense that’ll come with the place. Because the last thing you want is to pass off on all the other PGs and then find out that the one you chose needs a 3 month’s security deposit. If you’re okay with that, then cool. Or else, it’ll sort of be like starting your PG-hunting from scratch, arghhhh.
We know you’re at the age when your safety and security concern your parents more than you. But we suggest you don’t take it too lightly. Trust us, you don’t want to live in a PG where the PG manager brings in his friends and parties loudly on the terrace. Or worse, move into a neighborhood that’s kind of like the real-life version of Mirzapur. Sure, that might sound exciting to some. But except for the lead characters, it’s no fun for those extras that get caught in the crossfire. Not speaking literally tho.
When you’re in a double, triple, or quadruple sharing paying guest accommodation, doing a prior vibe check with your roomies is key. Of course, not every place would give you the chance to do so. You’ll only get introduced on the day of moving. But here’s a lifehack for that. Talk to your batchmates or even seniors who are looking to change PGs. Do a vibe check then and if everything feels right, hunt for a place together. No thanks needed.
We’ve already told you that your PG should ideally be close to your college. Now, that’s a big radius to consider, innit? Yes. So we suggest you be nit-picky about the location even more. Let’s say, you’ve found 2-3 PGs near your college, and only one of them has an ATM, a vegetable market, and a good local eatery nearby. Then it’s better to choose that one given you’d have to keep visiting these places every now and then. Got it?
