When I moved to Chennai for work, many people told me one thing –
“Chennai is cheaper than Bangalore, you will manage easily.”
But once I started living here, I realised that expenses are low only if you choose the right place and lifestyle. Chennai is comfortable, affordable, and peaceful, but planning is still important.
In this blog, I am sharing a real and practical breakdown of monthly expenses for working professionals in Chennai, based on my experience and what most office-going people spend here.
This blog will help:
On average, a working professional in Chennai spends between ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 per month. Compared to other metro cities, Chennai is more affordable, especially for accommodation and food.
If you stay in a PG or co-living space with food included, your expenses stay controlled. If you rent a flat and eat outside daily, your monthly cost increases.
Let us understand each expense clearly so you can plan better.
Accommodation takes the largest portion of your salary, even in Chennai. However, compared to Bangalore or Mumbai, rents are still reasonable.
A shared PG or hostel in Chennai usually costs between ₹6,000 to ₹10,000 per month. This option is very common among freshers and entry-level professionals.
A private room in PG or co-living costs around ₹10,000 to ₹16,000. You get more privacy, better facilities, and fewer daily worries.
Renting a 1 BHK flat starts from ₹12,000 and can go up to ₹20,000, excluding maintenance and utility bills.
From my experience, PG or managed co-living is the best option when you are new to Chennai, as it saves money and avoids landlord-related stress.

Food in Chennai is affordable, tasty, and easily available. But your food expense depends a lot on where you stay.
If you stay in a PG or co-living with food included, you don’t have to worry about daily cooking or ordering food. This saves money and time after long office hours.
If you eat outside regularly, your monthly food expense can be around ₹3,000 to ₹6,000, depending on how often you eat out.
Cooking at home costs around ₹2,500 to ₹4,000 per month, but managing groceries and cooking daily is not easy for everyone.
Personally, having food included in rent helped me manage my budget and focus on work.
