Here’s a general idea about the local transport in Hyderabad. In terms of costs, the MMTS metro and local buses are the cheapest options. But while they might cost you less, they’re not connected to all the areas. So for shorter distances, autorickshaws, rental bikes, and shared autos are the cheapest while cabs are more on the expensive side.
However, in case your college is not too far away from your student PG in Hyderabad, then riding a bicycle is the best option. It’ll cost you less, it’s environmentally friendly and it’ll also make you look cool. Add to that a big stereo and wear a bit of bling, and you’ll straight up look like an extra in a Macklemore video.
Yep, this point is more like a warning sign. So that you get no surprises later. When it comes to taking an auto offline, the process will be harder than you might think. It’ll take you a lot of time bargaining and you may still end up being overcharged. Also, even if they tell you to go by the meter, you can’t really trust it. So instead, you can avoid all this by booking a ride through an app.
Now that you know all your options, here’s something you should note. That is, no matter which city you live in, it’s super economical to have a commuting partner. All your fares will be split and you’d have company as well. So once you land in the city and start gelling with your PG mates or college mates, try and figure if any of them share a similar route to yours. It’s like carpooling with a friend. Except none of you own cars so you use one owned by the government.
Even on shorter distances, it’s always good to carry a pack of essentials. Because you never know when the sun turns cruel and it gets impossible to take a #sunkissed selfie. So make sure you carry a water bottle, a pack of wet wipes, sunscreen, and also a chocolate bar in case your energy gets super low.
