The best part about public transport in Chennai is that the fares are super cheap. While a metro ticket may cost you ₹10 for 0-2 km, a local bus ticket can cost you around ₹3 – ₹50. Although both of them are well-connected to the main areas of the city, for the inner areas, auto rickshaws, cycle rickshaws, and rental bikes are more viable options.
Also, last but definitely not least, bicycles are probably the best option for you to travel short distances. And given Chennai is one of the most cycle-friendly cities in India, why wouldn’t you? So don’t think twice before giving the local Decathlon a visit. And as an excuse, you get an opportunity to buy more fitness equipment that you’d end up not using again. #sorrynotsorry
As we said, autos and rental bikes are preferred options when it comes to commuting in Chennai over short distances. But here’s the thing, you should take autos by booking them online through apps like Uber and OLA only. Or else, you’d end up spending a lot offline. Thanks to overcharging and the meters either being dodgy or completely turned off.
And in case you don’t have time to book online, the trick is to open the apps, look at the fare for the location you wanna get to, and then use that as a reference point to bargain with the local autos. It’s kinda like motivating a friend to give you a favor. By telling them how another friend says no when you ask them’ for a favor. #tricked
So this is what you do wherever you go. Try and find a commuting partner for your daily travel from your PG to your college. That way, you can split the fares and also enjoy some company to make you’re commuting a lot less monotonous and taxing. Now, we know you may be awkward to ask your PG mates about it, but trust us, almost every one of them will probably be looking for the same thing. So..
If you’re fixated on moving to Chennai, then you must know about the scorching heat already. For that, we suggest you carry a pack of essentials in your backpack. An energy bar or drink will boost you when you feel dizzy. And a pack of wet wipes and sunscreen will protect you from the sun. Plus, don’t forget to take a chill bottle of water. Chennai’s weather is so humid, that there’ll be more sweat dripping from your body than the number of tears from Tiktokers in all of their mushy videos combined.
