If you’ve left your hometown for the first time, chances are you’re pretty much a newbie when it comes to managing an entire house on your own. And given that you’ve got a little settling down to do, living in a co-living space (like Stanza Living) will make everything easier. From getting your meals on time to getting your laundry taken care of – no questions asked. Basically, you’ll get even more time to kill at Old Gupta eateries or the tea stalls outside your college campus.
When you’re a student, the most amount of money you’ll spend is very much likely to be on food. Maybe when you’re sitting with your college buds writing your assignments last minute. Or during the evening adda with your roomies. Or maybe while chilling in those hole-in-the-wall cafes for hours and hours. Now, we know those things are not really avoidable. So make sure you’re constantly looking out for student discounts and subsidized canteen food. Pro-tip: make friends with a localite who also happens to be a day scholar for those amazing dinner invitations. *wink* *wink*
If you’re put up in a rented room in Delhi, a huge chunk of your allowance will be taken away by the rent itself. So the best thing you can do is to buy used items or borrow from seniors that have moved out. If not anything, you can always find a used bed sofa or plastic chairs when you ask around in North Campus. Also, you don’t need to spend a fortune on new course books. Anyway, they’re not your favorite novels that you need to smell the hardcover. So even battered secondhand books and xeroxed pages will do.
We’d have suggested you carpool, but you’re students. So it’s unlikely for you or any of your friends to own a vehicle. Though what we mean is you can still do rickshaw-pool, auto-pool or maybe even save extra by taking a walk to college with a batchmate. Also, a walk to college alongside the North ridge is always lovely during early winters. Pro-tip no. 2: make friends and hitch a daily ride with a localite who brings his dad’s Mercedes to college.
The one amazing thing about Delhi is that it’s got something for everyone. And that includes affordable groceries, food, clothes, or basically everything that’s under the sun. For example, there are pop-up markets that come up on Fridays or Saturdays with heavy discounts. As for clothes, there’s always a Sarojini or Janpath, an auto ride away from campus. So you can shop cheap, save plenty, and still flex in front of your hometown friends that you buy all those dapper clothes in kilos instead of the usual, well, piece-by-piece.
