First thing first, shortlist a few localities before you tie your shoelaces and go out there hunting for PGs or studio apartments for rent. For this, consider the quality of living in those neighborhoods. And their distance from your place of work or study. Using just these parameters, you should end up with about 3-4 localities. Because honestly, there’s no point in randomly searching for affordable listings if you don’t narrow down your search. Also, you’re not as lucky as Rachel that you go to a cafe and find your future roomies so easily either.
After you’ve shortlisted the localities, it’s time to search for listings. You can either visit online rental listing websites or look for managed accommodation providers that have residences in those areas. In case none of them work out, you can either look for a broker or ask your acquaintances to help you with leads. Following that, you’ll surely end up with a couple of properties under each of your shortlisted localities. Basically, it’s important to plan your hunt well. And even questions like if the entry lane to the house floods up when it rains heavily. Sure, you might come across as that super nit-picky student from school. But it’ll be worth it when you end up in a solid rental place.
So once you have all the info covered, come back home and sit down to evaluate these properties. While your brain would pick some as the most logical choices, your heart will fancy the others more. Now, we’ll not tell you whom to listen to, but we’ll say this. Always go for the one that fits the bill in the long run. Otherwise, you’d end up crying to the moon sitting on your pretty balcony. The balcony for which you settled for a mediocre property with the plumbing flooding your washroom every now and then.
